METRO MASS TRANSIT LIMITED GOVERNING BOARD INAUGURATED

21st Sep 2021 | PR UNIT

A deputy minister for Transport, Hon. Fredrick Obeng Adom has charged the Governing Board of the Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMTL) to ensure the company is revived to the level of winning back its share of the market and expand its services.

He said the company was setup with a common objective to carry on the business of providing intra-city, inter-urban and rural-urban bus services at affordable cost to the public and once operated about 1,400 buses in over 260 assemblies and was particularly effective in servicing difficult-to-reach areas, ensuring that people in such areas had reliable and safe means of transport.

“However, over the years, the company has gone through several challenges including the drastic reduction in operational fleet, frequent breakdowns and rising operating cost. It is our expectation that the new Board will take up this challenge to ensure that the company is revived and improve on its services”, he noted.

The deputy minister said these when he inaugurated the Governing Board of the Metro Mass Transit Limited, adding, the Board Members should bring to bear their expertise on the MMTL’s operations through their directives and advise to the company.

Hon. Obeng Adom noted the Board should work with management to end the often heard of agitations that confront the company to ensure industrial harmony among staff and management. He added the Ministry will provide the needed support and guidelines to enable the Board deliver on its task but cautioned members against any attempt to take over the role of management either directly or indirectly.

He however encouraged the Board and Management to work as a team to realize the objectives of the company.

The deputy minister noted, “under the governance framework, the Board was under the supervision of the Ministry and for that matter must report directly to the Ministry no matter the magnitude of the issues and the Ministry will do its best to resolve it”.

Speaking on behalf of the Board, Hon. Kofi Ahenkorah Marfo, said they were ready to put up their best so as MMTL will be the preferred mode of transport for economic activities in the country.
