President John Dramani Mahama has formally opened the maiden Ghana Transport and Logistics Fair 2025, boldly declaring the event a pivotal moment in the nation’s commitment to transform and “reset” its transport sector.
Speaking at the three-day fair which is running from 22nd to 24th October 2025 with the theme ‘Resetting Ghana’s Transport Sector for Improved Connectivity, Innovation, and Investment’ and driven by the slogan ‘Driving Connectivity, Innovation, and Sustainable Growth for Ghana’s Future’, President Mahama asserted that this landmark event is 'more than a gathering of stakeholders; rather, it is a bold expression of our collective resolve to reset Ghana’s transport and logistics sector, anchoring it on modernity, sustainability, innovation, and efficiency.’
He described transport as the lifeblood of every economy; it connects people to opportunities, drives innovation, and fuels inclusive national development.
President Mahama indicated that his government is “fully committed to building a safe, accessible, and technology-driven transport system that supports job creation, enhances trade, and aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).”
This commitment, he said, involves modernising rail, road, maritime, and aviation systems, improving intermodal connectivity, and leveraging digital platforms to streamline logistics operations across the country.
He also stressed the importance of promoting smart mobility, developing a robust regulatory framework for the safe use of motorcycles and tricycles for fare-paying passenger services (Okada) and expanding the reach of public transport systems, all within a framework that prioritises safety, efficiency, and environmental sustainability.
The Minister for Transport, Hon. Joseph Bukari Nikpe, on his part, underscored the Ministry’s strategic interventions aligned with the vision of ‘Building the Ghana we want together.’
According to him, the vision demands bold reforms that prioritise efficiency, safety, and sustainability across all modes, emphasizing the commitment to transform urban mobility to reduce congestion by investing in smart, resilient infrastructure and actively creating opportunities for young people, women, and persons with disabilities.
In the aviation sector, Hon. Nikpe highlighted that the Ministry is on course to establish a national airline and has introduced advanced security measures such as the passenger information system and passenger name record system. It also includes the expansion and modernisation of Kotoka International Airport (KIA), the repurposing of Terminal 2 and the construction of a new Air Traffic Control Tower, along with the extension of the runway at Prempeh Agyemang I International Airport.
For maritime transport, “the rehabilitation of the Tema Harbour breakwater is ongoing, the Ghana Shippers Authority is working to reduce port business costs through effective regulation, and feasibility studies are set to begin soon for the development of coastal water transportation,” he said.
On road transport, the sector Minister said the amendment of the Road Traffic Act (2004) and Regulations (2012) is ongoing to promote safety and support job creation by formalising the use of motorcycles and tricycles for fare-paying passenger services.
Touching on the public transport system, Hon. Nikpe mentioned that programmes are simultaneously underway to renew the fleet of Metro Mass Transit Limited and Intercity STC Coaches Limited, aiming to expand services and drive sector decarbonisation through the introduction of electric buses, while works have resumed on the Western Railway line and services on the Tema-Mpakadan Line.
These comprehensive interventions, the Minister noted, are supported by strategic partnerships with the private sector to mobilise investment, ultimately aiming to make Ghana the preferred transport and logistics hub within the West African sub-region and under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
The fair itself will showcase the latest in vehicles, aviation technologies, shipping solutions, rail concepts, electric mobility, and digital platforms, offering students and the public a rare opportunity for firsthand experience.
