The second day of the maiden Ghana Transport and Logistics Fair hosted two pivotal and distinct discussions led by key officials from the Ministry of Transport, underlining the sector's commitment to both gender equality and specialised human capital development.
These dialogues are essential components of the Ministry’s strategy to position Ghana as a sophisticated transport and logistics hub in West Africa.
A Deputy Director at the Ministry, Ms Millicent Wutsika, moderated an inspiring session on “Women and the Future of Transport: Equality in the Air, Water and Land.”
The discussion moved beyond rhetoric, focusing on practical measures to ensure women are fully integrated into all operational and leadership roles across the country’s transport modes.
Participants stressed the need to address gender disparities across all three spheres of maritime, aviation, and road/rail by improving safety protocols for female commuters and workers and developing gender-responsive infrastructure design.
Additionally, the conversation urged the need to speed up policies that help women gain technical skills in areas like marine engineering, logistics automation, and piloting, which have mostly been male dominated, so they can succeed as innovators and leaders in the transport industry.
Following this, the Head of Aviation at the Ministry, Mr. Edward Agbodjan, spearheaded a session on "Building the Human Capital for Ghana's Aviation Renaissance."
This discussion was crucial for aligning the national vision for a modernised aviation sector with the requisite workforce. The panel stated that there is an urgent need for targeted training in specific skills to support major projects, including airport upgrades and the expansion of the air travel industry.
The most critical skills identified were those of air traffic controllers, specialized maintenance engineers, and aviation safety experts.
The Ministry of Transport’s dedication to these two themes, equality and specialized skills, demonstrates a holistic commitment to building a world-class, inclusive, and competitive transport and logistics sector for Ghana.
