TRANSPORT MINISTER ANNOUNCES QUICK-RESPONSE BUS SERVICE TO EASE ACCRA EVENING COMMUTE

10th Dec 2025 | PR UNIT

Hon. Joseph Bukari Nikpe has today announced a temporary rollout of expanded bus service boost across four critical routes in the Greater Accra Region.

The initiative, labeled a “quick-response effort” by the Minister, is specifically designed to alleviate bottlenecks in urban transit and support daily commuters struggling to reach home.

The emergency fleet activation begins today, December 10th. Operating Hours: The additional services will run through the busiest evening window, from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

A minimum of eight extra buses per route will be deployed after work.

According to the sector minister, the Ministry is leveraging idle coaches from the State Transport Company (STC), which include long-haul buses that complete their intercity trips early and are not scheduled for departure until the following day, thereby maximizing fleet availability.

“We’re activating additional buses right away to make sure people finishing their workday can travel home without hassle during high-demand times,” the Minister stated during a discussion on Citi FM, emphasizing the teamwork with STC.

The focused relief effort targets four heavily used pathways identified for their high commuter volume:

 Accra-Madina-Adenta Line

Accra-Achimota-Amasaman Path

Accra-Mallam-Kasoa Stretch

Accra-Tema Beach Road (to Tema)

The Minister noted intentions to expand the fleet capacity soon. “Our goal is to ramp up operations, so no one gets left behind,” he added.
