11th Mar 2026 | MOT PRO UNIT

The Minister for Transport, Honourable Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has paid a working visit to the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) to inspect ongoing works at Terminal 2 of the Accra International Airport.

The visit forms part of the Ministry’s continuous oversight of critical aviation infrastructure projects aimed at strengthening Ghana’s position as a leading aviation hub in the West African sub-region.

During the visit, the Minister was briefed by the Managing Director of GACL, Mrs. Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, on the progress of the works to remodel and repurpose Terminal 2. The redevelopment project is designed to transform the facility into a modern terminal capable of serving both domestic and international airlines.

Mrs. Opare explained that the ongoing work was progressing steadily and expected to significantly enhance passenger handling capacity and operational efficiency at the airport. She further assured the Minister that the project was on schedule and expected to be fully completed and operational by the end of July this year.

The remodelling captures the floor, the walls, the ceiling, and the leakages of the facility. We want to make the terminal very modern so it would serve the airlines, passengers, and our citizens efficiently and effectively,” she explained.

Following the briefing, the Hon. Nikpe toured the entire facility to assess the progress of construction and remodelling works firsthand. He interacted with contractors, engineers, and project officials to better understand the scope of the work and the expected benefits upon completion.

He expressed satisfaction with the progress made so far and reiterated the Government’s commitment to supporting infrastructure development within the aviation sector. According to him, the redevelopment of Terminal 2 would modernise the facility, improve passenger experience, and position Ghana as a competitive gateway for international and regional air travel.

The government aims to make Accra International Airport one of the best in the sub-region and on the African continent. The government, through the Ministry, wants to make the airport function properly and connect the world at large,” the Minister emphasised.

Hon. Nikpe commended the management and technical team of the GACL for the progress made and encouraged them to maintain the pace of work to ensure the timely completion of the project as stated in the contract.

“We toured the place with all the airlines so they can also assess the quality and progress of work at the terminal. We aim to make it a dual-purpose terminal that can better serve our domestic and international airlines,” he added.

When completed, the remodelled Terminal 2 is expected to enhance operational efficiency at the Accra International Airport, improve service delivery to airlines and passengers, and contribute significantly to the growth and development of Ghana’s aviation industry
