The President of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, has cut the sod for a new connecting concourse between Terminals 2 and 3 at the Accra International Airport.
The project forms part of the government’s efforts to address congestion, expand capacity, and improve passenger movement, as Ghana positions itself as a key aviation hub in West Africa.
Speaking at the ceremony, President Mahama said the project reflects a deliberate investment in infrastructure to support growth and improve efficiency within the aviation sector. He noted the steady rise in passenger traffic, from 1.8 million in 2022 to 2.5 million in 2025 and stressed the need to expand existing facilities to meet growing demand.
“This project is an investment in efficiency, passenger experience, and Ghana’s economic future because we are witnessing significant growth in passenger numbers and pressure during peak hours. This project is therefore a timely intervention to sustain efficiency and service delivery,” he added.
Providing further details, the Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, said the project formed part of broader upgrades at the airport aimed at improving operations and passenger convenience. These include the installation of seven 3D CT Connect enhanced baggage scanners, a vehicle scanning system, repurposing of Terminal 2 to serve national and international flights, construction of an ultramodern traffic control tower, construction of a multi-storey car park to accommodate 2000 cars, and the development of three Commercial Important Person (CIP) and VIP lounges.
“The construction of this concourse reflects our commitment to building an airport system that meets future demand and strengthens Ghana’s position as a preferred travel destination,” the Minister said.
The Minister also reiterated the role of air transport in driving economic growth, tourism, trade, and investment, and urged contractors to adhere to high standards of safety and quality while still ensuring a timely delivery of the project. He added that, upon completion, the concourse will enable seamless movement between Terminals 2 and 3, reduce transit time, and improve operational efficiency for airlines and airport users.
The project is expected to improve transit connectivity, enhance passenger services, and support efficient coordination of domestic and international flight operations, reinforcing Ghana’s ambition to become a leading aviation hub in the West African Sub-Region
